Racism played a role in Elliot Rodger's Santa Barbara murder spree: experts
This time, we’ve seen misogyny and men’s sense of entitlement added to the usual suspects of guns and mental illness. We’d suggest another variable be added to the lethal equation: race.
As the movement around the shooting continues to gain momentum, and mainstream feminist organizations heavily discuss and analyze Elliot Rodger’s actions and history; one particular subject seems to have been frequently forgotten: Race in the context of motivation for Rodger’s attack and victims.
Before Elliot Rodger went on his shooting spree along a busy main street in Isla Vista, he had first laid siege to his home, stabbed and bludgeoned his roommates. All of whom, were men of color. Asian-American men to be specific.
In Rodger’s manifesto he clearly details his disdain for his ‘full blooded’ Asian-American roommates, and their African-American friend who frequently visited. Rodger, whose mother is Asian-American, and father is of “British Aristocracy”, repeatedly expressed feeling superior to men of color because of his European ancestry and appearance. In fact, he thought that it was ‘disgusting’ that white women would dare spend time or sleep with men of color. One might even argue, that Rodger’s obsession with Blonde White Women [Who he claimed oppressed him by denying him sex] were fetishized by him, and his quest for ultimate whiteness.
Of Black men in particular Rodger had to say:
One of them was a black boy named Lucky R***** , who I thought was very nice at
The time. I found it strange that he had the same name as my dog. He was a fourth grader, and he would later go to the same middle school as me, where would become an object of my extreme jealousy and hatred. Looking back, I can’t believe I actually played with him as a friend my father’s neighborhood.
….And then this black boy named Chance said that he lost his virginity when he was only thirteen! In addition, he said that the girl he lost his virginity to was a blonde white girl! I was so enraged that I almost splashed him with my orange juice. I indignantly told him that I did not believe him…
How could an inferior, ugly black boy be able to get a white girl and not me? I am beautiful, and I am half white myself, I am descended from British aristocracy. He is descended from slaves. I deserve it more.
When his anti-black racism met his violent misogyny it took on this ghastly form in text:
I tried not to believe his foul words, but they were already said, and it was hard to erase from my mind. If this were actually true, if this ugly black filth was able to have sex with a blonde white girl at the age of thirteen while I’ve had to suffer virginity all my life, then this just proves how ridiculous the female gender is. They would give themselves to this filthy scum, but they reject ME? The injustice!
Rodger’s anti-Asian racism/Internalized Racism is highlighted multiple times as well:
As my frustration grew, so did my anger. I came across this Asian guy who was talking to a white girl. The sight of that filled me with rage. I always felt as if white girls thought less of me because I was half-Asian, but then I see this white girl at the party talking to a full-blooded Asian. I never had that kind of attention from a white girl! And white girls are the only girls I’m attracted to, especially the blondes. How could an ugly Asian attract the attention of a white girl, while a beautiful Eurasian like myself never had any attention from them. I thought with rage.
In analyzing this horrendous crime as an isolated event, we 1.) leave room for people to dismiss Elliot Rodger’s internalized racist complex and his gross intoxication on the privilege he inherited by passing for a “European-American” 2.) enable gross apologism, that demonizes people with mental illnesses, as people have time and time again tried to say that Rodger was a “disturbed” boy, a luxury almost always and solely afforded to white male violent offenders 3.) White male entitlement [see Economic Class Privilege/Classism] in action via misogyny and violent actions to maintain the status quo in white male dominated society.
RACE MATTERS. GENDER AND SEX MATTER.
Enough is enough.
